Change Management Methodology

Promote positive transitions with the world's best Change Management training

The Change Management Process and Methodology is a structured approach to transitioning individuals, teams and organisations from a current state to a desired future state. These approaches require an understanding of the psychological and organisational dynamics at work.

Objectives

Change Management can be thought of as the link between deliverables and benefits. Unless deliverables are used and used well, the benefits will not be achievable.

Successful change is about getting the people to be “ready, willing and able” to use the deliverables.

Process

Good Change Management is closely coupled with good project management. In smaller initiatives, one person may be both the Project Manager and the Change Manager, but in larger processes these roles can be shared.

Phases

In any initiative, there are five phases:

1. Defining the change

  • Combining a good understanding of the drivers for change with a clear vision, a well-defined set of goals and clearly understood 'end states', serves to identify the benefits that can be gained from this change.

  • Ensure that there is a sponsor in place.

2. Planning for the change and establishing the team

  • Establish the change team, possibly including a network of change agents.

  • Establish relationships with all levels of the portfolio, programme and project environment.

  • Build connections with learning and development groups and any communications department.

  • Perform a stakeholder analysis and impact assessment, and develop a change management strategy, including a communications strategy along with 'how you intend to monitor the change.'

3. Preparing for the change

  • Manage risks and issues.

  • Monitor reaction to the change and be prepared to deal with resistance and be willing to change your strategies and plans.

  • Ask yourself the following two questions: 'Are you on track?' 'How well developed are your deployment strategies and plans?'

4. Deployment (Implementing the change)

  • Finalise training and handover arrangements.

  • Ensure new monitoring systems are in place to properly capture performance after the change.

  • Check to make sure the levers for sustaining the change are firmly in place.

  • Publish information about progress and look for success stories.

5. Sustaining the change

  • Ensure that the handover to 'Business as Usual' operations is complete.

  • Continue to publish success stories.

  • Ensure that the behaviour of middle and senior management is compatible with the change.

  • Watch for signs of a relapse into the old ways.

  • Identify and manage outstanding risks to sustainability.
